Portland Pearl District Family Session
The Pearl District in Downtown Portland is one of the prettiest areas in the city. There are parks and trees, and so many different textures on the street and buildings. Tanner Springs Park is a beautiful city park with some very cool architecture. This is a great place for family photography sessions any time of year, but it is especially lovely in the fall. I met the Barney family in the Pearl District in mid-November. It was a little past prime fall colors but it was still pretty and we had great weather. I first photographed the Barney last year at a Christmas Tree Farm. We thought a more urban look for this years family photos would be a nice contrast.
I love working with this family. The Barney family is so sweet and have the most well-behaved and silly little girls. They are always so happy and love one another so much. Those beautiful girls are growing up so fast. It’s always exciting for me when I get to photograph families year after year. Kids grow so fast and its amazing how much changes in a year. This is one of the main reasons I believe family portraits should be done at least once a year.
Late Fall Family Photos in the Pearl District

WHY THE PEARL DISTRICT IS PERFECT FOR FAMILY PHOTOS
Late fall in the Pearl District and Tanner Springs Park has a quiet kind of beauty that feels completely different from peak fall—but just as meaningful. Even as the leaves begin to fall, you still get rich tones scattered along the streets and pathways, mixed with warm brick, modern textures, and soft natural greenery. It creates a layered, timeless backdrop that doesn’t rely on perfect foliage to feel beautiful.
This area is especially great for families because there’s so much variety within a short distance. We can move between city streets, tucked-away nature, and open spaces without needing to travel far. And with fewer crowds and a slower pace, it’s easier for everyone to settle in, stay present, and enjoy the time together—exactly how family photos should feel.
